# Choosing the Best ONT Location Before Installation

**Answer:** Install the ONT in a dry, protected and accessible position near reliable power and within a safe, approved fibre route. Keep its status lights and labels visible. The ONT does not have to be the perfect broadcast point for every room; whole-home Wi-Fi and Ethernet distribution can be designed separately after handover.

### What the ONT does

The optical network terminal, or ONT, is the FNO device that terminates the fibre access line at the premises and provides the Ethernet handoff used by the router.

It is not simply a decorative wall box. Its location affects:

- how the fibre enters and is protected;
- whether equipment can be powered;
- whether labels and status lights can be read;
- risk of accidental damage or tampering;
- ease of future maintenance;
- how the router or internal network connects to it.

Moving fixed fibre equipment later can require an FNO visit and a charge. Decide before the installer drills or mounts anything.

### The six requirements of a good ONT location

#### 1. A technically feasible fibre route

The FNO must be able to reach the location without crushing, sharply bending or exposing the fibre. A preferred room may be too far from the standard entry point or require specialist work.

Ask the installer to show the complete visible route and any wall penetrations.

#### 2. Suitable power

The ONT needs electricity. The router normally needs a separate supply. Confirm the actual power arrangement for the equipment being installed rather than assuming one outlet or one adapter is enough.

#### 3. Accessibility

ISPA recommends that customer-premises equipment be installed so status lights and identifying labels can be accessed. Choose a position where a person can read the indicators and serial number without moving built-in furniture or using unsafe access equipment.

Accessibility does not mean placing the ONT in a public passage or where children, pets or visitors can pull the cables.

#### 4. Protection from damage

Avoid:

- wet areas and plumbing leaks;
- direct weather exposure unless the equipment and enclosure are approved for it;
- floor level where cleaning or flooding can reach it;
- hot roof spaces or unventilated boxes;
- kitchens or workshops with grease, dust or impact risk;
- doors, cupboards or furniture that can crush the lead;
- loose routes across walking areas;
- outdoor public positions vulnerable to theft or vandalism.

#### 5. A practical router or Ethernet connection

The router connects to the ONT by Ethernet. They can be close together, but they do not always have to occupy the exact same position if a suitable Ethernet run is planned.

#### 6. Future maintenance

The FNO may need to inspect or replace equipment. Leave enough space to access connectors and power without removing shelving or cutting cabinetry.

### ONT location vs router location

The ONT serves the access network. The router serves the home network. In a small home, one central position may suit both. In a larger or multi-storey home, forcing the fibre drop to the geometric centre can create a difficult route without solving Wi-Fi coverage.

A better design may be:

1. place the ONT in an accessible, protected position near the practical entry route;
2. connect the router or network distribution point by suitable Ethernet;
3. design access points or mesh around the building layout.

### Locations to evaluate carefully

#### Garage

Can offer a convenient boundary-side route and power, but consider heat, dust, water, vehicle impact, security and the distance to the internal network.

#### Study or home office

Often accessible and powered, but the fibre route may be long. Avoid mounting behind permanent desks or cupboards.

#### Lounge or central passage

May suit a router, but visible ducting and public access need consideration. Do not place the ONT where it will be bumped or unplugged regularly.

#### Distribution cupboard

Useful if ventilated, powered and accessible. A metal or sealed cabinet can be unsuitable for a Wi-Fi router even if the ONT itself fits, and fixed cabinetry can obstruct maintenance.

#### Roof space

Usually a poor choice for ordinary customer access because of heat, dust and unsafe reach. Use only if the FNO specifically approves the equipment and access arrangement.

#### Bedroom

Technically possible if the route and power suit, but consider equipment lights, access for maintenance and whether future occupants will block the device with furniture.

### A decision checklist before mounting

Ask:

- Can the FNO reach this point within the approved scope?
- Where will the fibre be visible?
- Are the ONT and router power supplies accommodated?
- Can the labels and lights be read easily?
- Is the area dry, ventilated and protected?
- Can children, pets, doors or furniture pull the cable?
- Is there a practical Ethernet route to the router or home network?
- Will future maintenance require property alterations?
- Does the owner or body corporate approve the location?
- Will moving the equipment later incur a fee?

### If the installer recommends another position

Ask for the technical reason. It may relate to standard distance, bend limits, conduit, drilling, building rules, equipment safety or the available network entry point.

If the alternative is unacceptable, pause and request a supervisor review or quote for a different feasible route. Do not pressure the installer into unsafe or unauthorised work.

**Does the ONT have to be central for good Wi-Fi?**

No. The router or access points determine Wi-Fi coverage. The ONT should be safely positioned for the fibre route and Ethernet handoff.

**Can the ONT be inside a cupboard?**

**Can I move the ONT myself later?**
