ENTER LAN brings four days of BYOC gaming to Cape Town

The biggest local gaming event this month is ENTER LAN Fire & Ice, running from 7–10 August 2026 at the Protea Hotel Fire & Ice! in Cape Town.

The four-day event brings approximately 100 gamers together for 80 hours of BYOC gaming, tournaments, social activities, raffles and community competitions. Attendees bring their own computer or console, plug into the LAN and settle in for an extended weekend of gaming.

UrbanX is the official connectivity partner for the event alongside Octotel. Together, UrbanX and Octotel are supplying two 10Gbps connectivity links to support the LAN floor, tournament activity and the wider event network. The event is the latest step in UrbanX’s ongoing relationship with the local gaming community.

August’s release calendar covers everything from post-apocalyptic action RPGs to competitive fighting games and classic stealth titles.

Beast of Reincarnation – 4 August

Game Freak has stepped beyond its best-known work on Pokémon with Beast of Reincarnation, a new action RPG set in a devastated version of Japan in the year 4026.

The story follows Emma and her canine companion, Koo. Its combat combines Emma’s real-time sword fighting with command-based abilities performed by Koo, allowing players to move between fast action and more deliberate tactical decisions.

Beast of Reincarnation launched on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC on 4 August. It is also available through Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass from day one, according to the official Xbox August Game Pass announcement.

For this kind of launch, the main connectivity consideration is download time. A higher-bandwidth fibre connection will not change the game’s combat mechanics, but it can reduce the time spent waiting for the initial installation and future updates.

Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls – 6 August

Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls launches on PS5 and PC on 6 August. Developed by Arc System Works, it combines Marvel characters with the studio’s distinctive fighting-game design.

Instead of a traditional one-on-one format, Tōkon is built around 4v4 teams. The launch version includes 20 playable characters, online Casual and Ranked matches, local Versus play, training modes and an open lobby.

The official PlayStation overview confirms that players will be able to move between casual matchmaking and a ranked ladder.

For South African players, the important factor will be where matchmaking places each opponent and how consistently traffic reaches the game’s servers. Raw download speed does not automatically lower ping; server location, routing, jitter and packet loss remain more important during competitive matches.

Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2 – 27 August

Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2 arrives on 27 August for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC through Steam.

The collection brings Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots to another platform for the first time since its original 2008 release. It also includes the HD Collection version of Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker and Metal Gear: Ghost Babel as bonus content.

According to Konami’s official announcement, Peace Walker supports online play for up to six players, although crossplay is not supported.

It is a substantial month for long-time Metal Gear fans—and a good reason to make sure there is space available on your SSD before launch day.

What is coming to Game Pass and PlayStation Plus?

Subscription services have several worthwhile August additions.

PlayStation Plus members can claim Dying Light 2 Stay Human: Reloaded Edition, Big Walk and Signalis from 4–31 August. Dying Light 2 supports online co-op for up to four players, while Big Walk is designed around cooperative exploration and communication.

When does the Gears of War: E-Day beta begin?

The Gears of War: E-Day Early Access Open Beta begins on 6 August for eligible Xbox and PC players.

Access is available through a qualifying pre-order or an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass subscription. The beta includes Horde Siege, a new 12-player PvE experience that divides players into three squads of four, together with the returning competitive Versus mode.

Microsoft’s official multiplayer deep dive describes Horde Siege as an evolution of the series’ classic wave-survival format, with larger maps, squad objectives and class-based play.

A public multiplayer test is also a reminder that beta performance is not always representative of the finished game. Server load, matchmaking demand and unfinished optimisation can all influence the experience during a test window.

gamescom Opening Night Live takes place on 25 August, followed by the main gamescom event in Cologne from 26–30 August.
