Octotel has expanded its FTTH Premium XGS-PON footprint, making UrbanX multi-gig home fibre available to more eligible households across Cape Town.

The latest expansion adds coverage in **Lakeside, Strand, Cape Gate, Mutual, Bree Street, Vredehoek, Melkbos, Blouberg, Sea Point, Green Point and Bantry Bay**.

Customers at qualifying addresses can now order UrbanX Octotel Premium packages offering speeds of up to **5Gbps download and 2.5Gbps upload**.

Availability remains address-specific. A listed area does not mean that every street, building or property is automatically serviceable, so customers should complete an exact [UrbanX coverage check](https://urbanx.co.za/sign-up) before selecting a package.

### New Octotel Premium fibre areas

The newly activated Octotel Premium areas are:

- Lakeside
- Strand
- Cape Gate
- Mutual
- Bree Street
- Vredehoek
- Melkbos
- Blouberg
- Sea Point
- Green Point
- Bantry Bay

These names describe the broader rollout footprint. Final availability depends on the Octotel node serving the property and the service status of the exact address.

### UrbanX Octotel Premium packages

Eligible customers can choose between two multi-gig FTTH packages:

Package Download speed Upload speed Monthly price Octotel FTTH Premium 2.5Gb Up to 2.5Gbps Up to 2.5Gbps R2,249 p/m Octotel FTTH Premium 5Gb Up to 5Gbps Up to 2.5Gbps R2,749 p/m

Both packages are uncapped, unshaped and unthrottled, with no fair usage policy. They are available on a flexible month-to-month basis, subject to UrbanX and Octotel’s standard terms and address-level availability.

Free installation and activation apply to qualifying new installations. A router is not bundled with these Premium packages, allowing customers to use compatible multi-gig hardware or purchase a suitable router through UrbanX.

### What is Octotel Premium XGS-PON fibre?

XGS-PON is a fibre-access technology designed to support multi-gigabit connectivity over a fibre-to-the-home network. In practical terms, it allows Octotel to offer line speeds above the traditional 1Gbps ceiling in supported parts of its network.

Octotel owns and operates the underlying fibre infrastructure. UrbanX provides the internet service delivered over that infrastructure, including customer support and connectivity through the UrbanX network.

### Who benefits from 2.5Gbps or 5Gbps home fibre?

Multi-gig fibre is designed for homes that need more total capacity than a standard connection can provide. It is particularly useful when several high-demand activities happen at the same time, including:

- Multiple gaming sessions across different devices
- Large game downloads and updates
- 4K or higher-resolution streaming
- Cloud backups and large file transfers
- Livestreaming and content production
- Remote work involving large media or project files
- Home labs, servers and network-attached storage
- Busy households with many connected devices

A faster line does not automatically reduce latency to every game server. What it does provide is significantly more capacity, helping prevent large downloads, streams and transfers elsewhere in the home from consuming the entire connection while you play.

### Your home network must support multi-gig speeds

A 2.5Gbps or 5Gbps fibre line is only one part of the setup. To use more than 1Gbps on a single device, the equipment between the fibre connection and that device must also support multi-gig networking.

Before ordering, check whether you have:

- A router with a suitable 2.5GbE, 5GbE or 10GbE WAN interface
- Multi-gig LAN ports or a compatible network switch
- Cat6 or better Ethernet cabling where appropriate
- A multi-gig network adapter on relevant wired devices
- Capable Wi-Fi hardware, correctly positioned for high wireless throughput

Wi-Fi performance varies according to the device, distance, interference, building layout and router capability.

Customers do not need every device to reach the full line speed to benefit. Multiple devices can share the connection’s total capacity at the same time.

### How to check Octotel Premium availability

To find out whether your home can order Octotel Premium fibre through UrbanX:

1. Visit the [UrbanX coverage checker](https://urbanx.co.za/sign-up).
2. Enter and select your exact street address.
3. Review the available Octotel packages for that property.
4. Choose the 2.5Gbps or 5Gbps package if it appears as available.
5. Speak to UrbanX if you need help choosing compatible multi-gig equipment.

If an area is listed above but the Premium packages do not appear for your address, the specific property or serving node may not yet be enabled.
