UrbanX Now Offers 2.5Gb and 5Gb Octotel Premium Fibre in South Africa

South Africa is officially entering the multi-gig era – and UrbanX is right there leading the charge for gamers. In partnership with Octotel, we’re bringing Premium FTTH network performance to residential customers and serious gamers with line speeds that push far beyond the traditional 1Gbps limit. If you’re in a qualifying Octotel area, you can now tap into true multi-gig fibre and experience the next generation of speed with UrbanX.

We’re introducing two new Premium Octotel Fibre Packages in eligible areas, built for serious power users, creators, and gamers who want fibre that can keep up with everything happening at home.

These are month-to-month services with free installation and free activation, positioned as ongoing premium products – not short-term specials.

What is Octotel Premium fibre?

Octotel Premium is a next-generation layer of Octotel’s fibre network that supports multi-gigabit speeds to the home. It’s aimed at households that push their connectivity harder than average: multiple 4K streams, uploads to the cloud, content creation, heavy gaming, remote work, and always-on smart-home devices.

As always:

  • Octotel owns and operates the fibre infrastructure.

  • UrbanX is your ISP – managing your account, routing, optimisation, and support on top of that infrastructure.

Where Octotel Premium is available and your home qualifies, you can now choose from:

  • FTTH Premium 2.5Gb / 2.5Gb – R2 249 p/m

  • FTTH Premium 5Gb / 2.5Gb – R2 749 p/m

Both are uncapped, month-to-month, and run over our gaming-focused network.

UrbanX Octotel Premium packages at a glance

FTTH Premium 2.5Gb / 2.5Gb – R2 249 p/m

This option is ideal if you need big performance in both directions:

  • Symmetrical 2.5Gbps download and 2.5Gbps upload

  • Great for serious gamers, streamers, YouTubers, designers, and remote workers

  • Handles multiple concurrent gaming sessions, 4K streams, big cloud backups, extremely low game latency and large file transfers

  • Perfect for gaming and work from home households where upload speed matters as much as download

If you’re regularly sending uploading game footage or replays, backing up huge archives, or streaming your games to Twitch while others use the line, this package gives you serious headroom all while retaining that sweet - low ping gaming experience.

FTTH Premium 5Gb / 2.5Gb – R2 749 p/m

This is the “no compromises” option for extreme gaming focused home networks:

  • 5Gbps download with 2.5Gbps upload

  • Ideal for multiple competitive gamers, content creators, and remote workers all online at once

  • Suited to homes with dozens of connected devices and always-on cloud services

  • Helps ensure that downloads, patches, and large transfers don’t throttle the rest of the household while in their gaming sessions

Even if some devices are still limited to 1Gbps, the line itself won’t be the bottleneck, giving everyone more consistent performance no matter what they choose to do with the extreme amount of bandwidth.

Free installation & activation – router not included

To keep this product as flexible as possible (and because most multi-gig users have strong preferences around hardware), these Premium packages follow a slightly different structure:

  • Free installation

  • Free activation

  • Standard UrbanX terms and conditions apply

  • No router bundled

You have two choices for your router:

  1. Buy a router from UrbanX

    • We can supply multi-gig capable gaming routers with 2.5Gbps or higher WAN/LAN support and modern WiFi standards – ideal for these line speeds.

  2. Bring your own router (BYO)

    • If you already own a high-end router or plan to source your own, you’re welcome to use it, as long as it supports the required interfaces and speeds.

This keeps costs aligned with performance and lets gaming enthusiasts build the exact home network they want.

Important to note: Black Friday pricing does not apply

These Octotel Premium products live in a different bracket to standard FTTH services. Because of that:

If you’re chasing pure value and low monthly costs, our standard Octotel or other FNO packages will likely be a better fit. These Premium lines are designed for customers who specifically want top-end performance and future-proofing, even at higher price points.

Do I need to upgrade my home network?

To get the most out of a 2.5Gbps or 5Gbps line, it’s worth checking:

  • Router
It should support at least 2.5Gbps WAN/LAN or have SFP/SFP+ options for higher speeds.

  • Cabling
Modern Cat6 or better cabling is recommended for multi-gig performance over copper.

  • Devices
Some PCs, NAS units, and workstations might benefit from 2.5G or 5G Ethernet adapters or a multi-gig switch.

  • WiFi
For wireless, look for WiFi 6, 6E or WiFi 7 support and a solid placement of access points.

Even if many of your devices stay at 1Gbps, the extra capacity on the fibre line means more users can do more at the same time without maxing out a 1Gbps bottleneck.

If you’re unsure, our team can help you choose whether to upgrade your router, add a multi-gig switch, or keep things simple and still benefit from the extra capacity.

Coming soon: Octotel Premium 10Gb with UrbanX

For the true speed addicts, we’re not stopping at 5Gb.

UrbanX is already planning to introduce a 10Gb Octotel Premium package in the near future, subject to Octotel availability and final product confirmation. This will be aimed at users who want:

  • Massive bandwidth for content production, gaming teams, backups, and labs

  • The ultimate low-latency, high-capacity line for multi-gamer and multi-creator households

  • A home network that can rival many business-grade setups

We’ll share more details on pricing, requirements, and launch timelines as soon as everything is locked in. If you’re interested, keep an eye on our channels or contact support to be added to a 10Gb waitlist.

How to check availability and sign up

Because Octotel Premium is still rolling out, not every Octotel-enabled area will support these speeds yet.

  1. Check coverage using our coverage tools or reach out with your address.

  2. If your home qualifies for Octotel Premium, request a 2.5Gb/2.5Gb or 5Gb/2.5Gb quote.

  3. Decide whether you’ll purchase a router from UrbanX or use your own.

  4. We’ll arrange your free installation and activation, subject to our standard terms and Octotel’s processes.

FAQs

Does Black Friday pricing apply to these 2.5Gb and 5Gb packages?
No. Our Octotel Premium products are excluded from Black Friday and other short-term promotions.

Is this business fibre or home fibre?
These are FTTH Premium services – designed for home use but powerful enough for home offices, creators, and serious gamers.

Do I have to use a specific router brand?
No. You can buy a recommended multi-gig router from UrbanX or provide your own compatible router.

What if my devices only support 1Gbps?
You’ll still benefit. Multiple 1Gbps devices can share a 2.5Gbps or 5Gbps line with much less contention than on a standard 1Gbps service.

When will the 10Gb package be available?
We’re working with Octotel to finalise the 10Gb product details. Once everything is confirmed, we’ll announce pricing and availability and open it up to UrbanX customers in eligible areas.
